The 2009 World Student Environmental Summit was held at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Eighteen countries were represented by a group of sixty students. The WSES discussions, using open space principals, focused on energy, university sustainability and a global response to climate change.
With over twenty presenters mingling with leading student in sustainability, the summit was educational, empowering and engaging.
This gathering was the second WSES. The inaugural summit was held at Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan. The WSES was spearheaded by a group of students at Doshisha University who were passionate about sustainability and student action. At the 2008 gathering, the delegates decided to form the International Student Environmental Network (ISEN) to maintain connectivity amongst delegates between summits.
We look forward to the 2010 WSES in Germany and the future of the International Student Environmental Network.

“The Summit will unite leading students in environmental sustainability with a goal of educating and empowering a new generation. With the world’s attention, the Summit will act as a platform for student engagement, innovation, and international relationships. It will be a celebration of the University’s achievements in environmental sustainability meanwhile delineating measures of change and demarcating solutions to the most pressing conundrum of our time: the changing climate.”
